“The purpose of martial arts is to express yourself honestly.”
-Bruce Lee
This is a quote I’ve loved for years—one I first heard decades ago—and it’s stuck with me ever since. I love this quote.
It sounds so powerful, so profound… and yet, if I’m honest, I don’t fully grasp it from a martial arts perspective (and I’ve trained for over 30 years). But through the lens of improv comedy, it makes sense: when you let ideas flow in the moment, you're expressing your true self.
Even though I don’t quite get what Bruce meant, it’s a great quote that has helped me quite a bit.
I’m curious about your thoughts, though…
- Do you see how “self-expression” can help you professionally (or personally)?
- Do you have any ideas about what this quote means in a martial arts context?
- Do you have any questions (or would you like me to write/create more content) about this idea?
Please, share your thoughts with me, and let me know if there is anything I can help you with!
By the way...since this quote is all about creativity and self-expression, if you haven’t yet checked out my podcast episode with Melissa Dinwiddie, it’s a perfect follow-up. We had a great conversation about creative flow, self-doubt, and showing up authentically. You can click or tap here to listen.
