“I still use ‘Yes, And’ all these years later. And every time I do, it works!”
The person saying this to me had seen me speak at an event five years ago. He was on the planning team for the conference, and he was the one who recommended me.
When he’d seen me speak previously, “Yes, And” wasn’t even the entire focus of my talk; it was just one of three points.
And yet, five years later, after just a fifteen-minute segment in a one-hour keynote, he was saying he still used the idea.
Wow! Color me impressed. And honored!
Yes, this is a bit of a brag, AND it is a testament to the power of simple concepts.
I sometimes lament the fact that I don’t have a 22-step system I can sell to clients that would take multiple sessions over months or years to teach and roll out. That would certainly lead to bigger sales!
But I’ve seen people have much greater success focusing on a few simple concepts that can have wide-reaching and long-lasting impact. Things like:
- Saying “yes, and.”
- Accessing the creative genius we all have inside.
- Taking things one small step at a time.
It is amazing to me how often people and organizations go after the complicated solution rather than the simple concept. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve fallen into this trap, too, and some things really do require more complexity. But when I remember to step back and simplify, things usually get easier…and more effective!
