The Books I Reach For When I Feel Like Quitting

You know that moment, right?

Where one more setback, one more rejection, hearing one more “yes, but” is enough to make you finally want to throw your hands up and say, “okay, enough! I QUIT!”

I certainly have over the last 30 years.

Some as recently as a year ago.

When that happens, there are a few things I do that help:

  • talking with friends and loved ones
  • going for a walk or exercising
  • journaling / free writing
  • dancing with reckless abandon in an empty barn

Ok, maybe I don’t do that last one so much (but I always wanted to give it a try…).

As a bit of an introvert and someone who has always been an avid reader, I also find myself turning in these moments to the wisdom and motivation I find in books. Sometimes even in re-reading books I love that have the right message for the moment.

I was invited to share a list of these books on BookDNA.com, a platform where authors recommend books around specific life experiences or questions.

The list is called 📘 5 Best Books for When You Want to Quit But You Know You Shouldn’t

These books can’t solve your problems. Only you can do that! But they might just give you a boost of motivation or one simple but powerful idea that gets you moving forward.

One of them might just have a concept that gets you to put those hands down, lift your head up, get out of the dancing barn and take just…one…more…step.

👉 You can check out the list here.

If you have your own go-to “keep going” reads, please share - I’d love to hear them!

P.S. If you've read all of these (or don't have time to!) and still need someone to take an outside look at your situation and provide some ideas for getting things rolling again, that's exactly what my YES AND Gameplan call is for.

It's a one-on-one diagnostic conversation where we look at your specific team, your specific change, and your specific situation; not just a framework on a slide. You walk out with a clear picture of where the “yes buts” are really happening, what's driving the apathy underneath them, and what small steps would actually move things. No pitch, no deck. Just the dig-deeper conversation most leaders never get to have about what's really going on with their people.
